Books, Books, and More Books!

Dad and his wife Ann have been doing some cleaning lately.
Lucky me gets the fruits of their labor!
They sent us two boxes of old books.
This condensed version of US History is dated 1872.
I love the classics!
Les libres en francais!
This book is very old as you can see when you look at the cover page in the next photo:).
Lovely old music books.
This copy of Ivanhoe is beautiful.
Emerson's Essays
This was one of my favorites...
as was this copy of Aunt Jo's Scrap Bag by Louisa May Alcott.
There were several lovely illustrations in this book.
Hmmm...I think I'll curl up with a good book and do some reading.
The problem is which book to choose?

THE KREATIV BLOGGER AWARD
was graciously awarded to me by Katie at
As part of this award I am to list 7 things about myself that you don't already know and then I am to award it to 7 deserving bloggers.
Let's do the easy part first-7 things about me.
1. I prefer pasta and veggies to meat.
2. I love ice cream.
3. My favorite color is blue.
4. Although I love Jane Austen, Charles Dickens is my favorite author.
5. My favorite modern day authors are Dorethea Benton Frank and Pat Conroy.
6. I've been trained in interior redesign.
7. I love to jog.
OK, here's the part where I wimp out. I can't possibly choose 7 bloggers from my list so I am breaking the rules and awarding this to everyone on my favorite bloggers list.

Please visit Katie@lebeaupeonvictorien blogspot-you will love it!
Thanks again Katie:)!

OMGoodness......These books are just 2die4!! I have some old books like these & I just love to feel the indentations of the covers & the quality of the binding. They mass produce books now & they are so cheaply made that there is no way the can last over 100 years.
You are a very lucky lady!!
Congrats on the award!!
Have a wonderful evening examining your treasure...
Love,
Marilyn

You just made me drool all over the keyboard! Or, is a lady not supposed to admit she did? Anywho, I think you should go with Louisa's book first. She's funny and easy to read without being overtly sentimental. Treasure Island is a rip-roaring adventure, too. Sigh. I'm slowly but surely creating my own collection of old books, too - my guilty pleasure. :)

Love the books! How wonderful to inherit such wonderful works as far back as 1827. OMG, Emerson and Sir Walter Scott. Woo-hoo! Enjoy...

Kim, forgot to say..James Whitcomb Riley..was a Hoosier ( Indiana)
We live near his hometown when we lived in Indiana...I knew the title of that book...very famous book of his.

Here is what I found out about him in brief..on the web.
James Whitcomb Riley was born on October 7, 1847, in Greenfield, Indiana in a log cabin, to local attorney Reuben A. Riley and his wife, Elizabeth (Marine) Riley, in a small cabin. His parents named him after James Whitcomb, the governor of Indiana. James Whitcomb Riley was their third child. He lived on the same property until he was 21. Riley was influenced by many of the visitors to his father's home. In particular, he was able to pick up the cadence and character of the dialect of central Indiana and the travelers along the old National Road, which came through in the many poems he went on to write. One particular visitor was Mary Alice Smith, who eventually stayed on to live with the Rileys. Mary Alice (Allie) Smith influenced Riley's poem Little Orphant Annie, which was originally to be called Little Orphant Allie but a typesetter's error changed the name of the poem.[5]

I love the Alcott book with the embossed title and wonderful illustrations.
So blue is your favorite colour and which shade... deep indigo, delicate teal, periwinkle or seagreen blue? So many it would be hard to choose.
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy your gift.

What absolutely wonderful treasure to receive. Each one so beautiful. I would love to just run my fingers over them. Don't you just love the way the covers are embossed? Or is the word etched? Anyway, I love the feel of vintage book covers!
